School-day pricing is lower, with the SAT at $60 and the PSAT at $18 for districts, and those orders close earlier, so ask your counselor about a school test date early in the year.
The College Board dates and deadlines page lists every sitting, and the ACT site lists test dates and score release dates. Score release timing is covered separately in our guide to SAT score release dates.
When do you collect transcripts and recommendations?
September is the request month for both, and transcripts get slower as the term gets busier. Teacher letters depend on a teacher's schedule, and the school report depends on a counselor plus a registrar.
Harvard shows how many moving parts are involved. Its application asks for the Common Application, Harvard-specific questions, a school report with a counselor letter, two teacher reports, a midyear school report for some applicants, and a final school report after admission.
Give each teacher something specific to work from. A short list of courses, projects, and moments that show your work produces a better letter than a generic request, and it takes you five minutes instead of an hour of back and forth.
- Request teacher recommendations in September, then send a follow-up note in October.
- Ask the counselor about the school report deadline, since some schools set a narrow window.
- Order official transcripts only once your school can produce them, then check the processing time.
- Upload unofficial transcripts early if a school accepts them, and send the official copy later.
Your transcript is also the evidence behind your grade point average, so confirm it matches what you have told schools. An error in the middle of senior year creates extra emails and extra weeks.
Which deadlines fall on November 1 and early January?
Early decision and early action deadlines cluster on November 1, 2026, and regular decision deadlines land on January 1 or 2, 2027. Knowing which type you are applying to tells you whether the offer is binding.
What each application plan means for the 2026-27 cycle
| Plan | Binding | Typical 2026-27 date | Decisions arrive |
| Early Decision | Yes | November 1 or November 15, 2026 | Mid-December |
| Single-Choice Early Action | Not binding, but it blocks other early plans | November 1, 2026 | Mid-December |
| QuestBridge National College Match | Yes | November 1, 2026 | Early December |
| Early Action | No | November 1 or November 15, 2026 | Mid-December |
| Early Decision II | Yes | January 1 or January 15, 2027 | Mid-February |
| Early Action II | No | January 1 or January 15, 2027 | Mid-February |
| Regular Decision | No | January 1 to February 1, 2027 | Late March or early April |
| Rolling admission | No | Varies by school | Varies, often within weeks |
Yale uses a single-choice early action round, so applying early there keeps other early and binding rounds off the table.
Harvard uses a restrictive early action round, which means it will not read your application alongside an early decision offer from another school. The Yale timelines page and the Harvard first-year applicants page both lay out their rounds in full.
UC runs on a single window instead of rounds. All nine campuses accept applications from October 1 to November 30, 2026, and most first-year decisions arrive in late March 2027.
That single window has one advantage, since you submit once and compare nine campuses later instead of juggling three separate rounds.
What happens between submitting and decisions?
You wait, and the waiting period is when the financial aid work happens. Offers in mid-December and late March are predictable, and they land around the aid deadlines you should already have on the calendar.
Every school on your list has its own aid form, and most of those forms ask for the same information, which is why the FAFSA and the CSS Profile exist.
The 2027-28 FAFSA opened in October 2026, and the federal deadline for the 2026-27 award year is June 30, 2027, though many states set earlier dates.
Financial aid deadlines that sit inside the application timeline
| Item | Date | Note |
| UC applications open | October 1, 2026 | All nine campuses, single window |
| UC financial aid forms open | October 1, 2026 | FAFSA and California Dream Act forms |
| UC financial aid deadline | March 2, 2027 | FAFSA, Dream Act, and GPA verification for Cal Grant |
| UC statement of interest | April 1, 2027 | Confirms which campus you want |
| Federal FAFSA deadline | June 30, 2027 | For the 2026-27 award year |
| UC final transcripts | July 1, 2027 | After the offer, before enrollment |
Waitlist movement matters more than students expect. Harvard reported that 75 students were admitted from its waiting list for the Class of 2029, and MIT offered a place to 561 applicants and admitted 10 of them.
A waitlist place is a real offer, so keep your acceptances open and reply promptly if one comes through.
How do decisions and the May 1 reply date work?
Mid-December for early rounds, late March for regular decisions, and May 1 to accept or decline. The reply date is the hard deadline of the whole cycle, because a missed offer becomes a waitlist seat that often never opens.
Compare aid packages side by side once offers arrive, and read the terms rather than the headline figure. One school may offer a better grant on paper and a weaker aid package in practice once you account for loan amounts, work-study, and the scholarship conditions attached to it.
- Request an aid comparison worksheet from each financial aid office before you commit.
- Check whether any scholarship you were admitted with requires a GPA or an enrollment level.
- Ask about the deposit refund policy, since deadlines and rules differ by school.
- Reply by May 1, and withdraw from the schools you will not attend so those seats open up.
The timeline for US college applications rewards an early start, and the full date list for the 2026-27 cycle sits in our college application deadline guide, which covers the Ivy dates in detail.
Next steps for the 2026-27 application cycle
Write down the two or three dates that cannot move, then work backward from the earliest one. For most students the fixed points are a test date, November 1, and May 1.
- Pick a school list of about ten schools with a mix of reach, likely, and safety options.
- Register for a test date in September and set the school exam date as a backup.
- Ask two teachers and your counselor for recommendations in September.
- Request the transcript and the school report as soon as your school allows it.
- Write two essay drafts in October and cut the final one to 650 words.
- File the FAFSA and any state aid forms as soon as they open in October.
- Submit before the earliest deadline on your list, then compare aid packages in April.
- Reply by May 1 and finish enrollment paperwork over the summer.
If you want preparation that fits between the deadlines, our SAT prep book guide covers the current options, and the UC Berkeley deadlines page shows how a single-window school runs its cycle.
Verify current requirements. Deadlines, fees, and test policies change between cycles. Confirm every date on the school's own admissions page before you plan around it.
