Hair growth vitamins are dietary supplements that support the hair growth cycle by providing the nutrients the body needs to build and maintain healthy hair. The most important nutrients for hair are biotin, zinc, iron, vitamin D, vitamin C, marine collagen, and saw palmetto. Hair growth vitamins work best for people with a nutritional deficiency that causes hair thinning. The right way to think about hair growth vitamins is as a nutritional foundation, not a magic bullet. They support the hair growth cycle, but they do not change genetics, hormones, or autoimmune causes of hair loss.
The hair growth cycle has four phases. The anagen phase is the active growth phase, which lasts 2 to 7 years and produces 1 centimeter of new hair per month. The catagen phase is a short transition phase, which lasts 2 to 3 weeks. The telogen phase is the rest phase, which lasts 3 to 4 months. The exogen phase is the shedding phase, when old hair falls out and new hair begins the anagen phase. Hair growth vitamins primarily work by extending the anagen phase and reducing the telogen phase, which means new hair growth shows up over months rather than weeks.

Nutrafol is the most clinically validated hair growth supplement on the market in 2026. The brand's patented Synergen complex includes saw palmetto, marine collagen, ashwagandha, and tocotrienols, plus biotin, zinc, and other supporting nutrients. The recommended dose is 4 capsules a day, and the 30-day supply costs 79 dollars. A 2022 clinical trial published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology showed 80 percent of women saw thicker hair in 6 months. Nutrafol is the right pick for anyone with genetic or stress-related hair thinning who wants the strongest clinical evidence. The trade-off is the high price, which works out to about 2.60 dollars a day, and the 4-capsule daily dose, which is more pills than most supplements.
Viviscal Pro
Viviscal Pro is the second most clinically validated hair growth supplement. The brand's AminoMar marine complex is the active ingredient, plus biotin, zinc, vitamin C, and other supporting nutrients. The recommended dose is 2 tablets a day, and the 60-tablet 30-day supply costs 50 dollars. A 2014 double-blind study in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology showed 77 percent of subjects reported less shedding after 90 days. Viviscal is the right pick for anyone whose main concern is excessive shedding rather than visible thinning. The trade-off is that Viviscal does not contain saw palmetto, so it does not address the hormonal component of genetic hair loss.
Nature's Bounty Hair Skin and Nails
Nature's Bounty Hair Skin and Nails is the most affordable clinically formulated hair growth supplement. The formula includes 2,500 micrograms of biotin, 5,000 micrograms of collagen, plus vitamins C, E, and zinc. The recommended dose is 2 softgels a day, and the 60-softgel 30-day supply costs 11 dollars. Nature's Bounty does not have a published clinical trial for the Hair Skin and Nails formula specifically, but the biotin and collagen doses are based on the clinical evidence for those individual nutrients. Nature's Bounty is the right pick for anyone who wants the basic hair growth nutrients at the lowest cost. The trade-off is the lack of saw palmetto and the lower biotin dose than some competitors.
Vital Proteins Hair Boost
Vital Proteins Hair Boost is the most protein-forward hair growth supplement. The formula includes 3,000 micrograms of biotin, plus hyaluronic acid and Type I and III collagen peptides. The recommended dose is 4 capsules a day, and the 60-capsule 30-day supply costs 40 dollars. Vital Proteins is the right pick for anyone who is already taking a collagen supplement for skin and joints and wants a combined hair-and-skin product. The trade-off is the 4-capsule daily dose and the lack of saw palmetto for hormonal hair loss.
Olly Heavenly Hair
Olly Heavenly Hair is the most convenient hair growth supplement because it comes in gummy form. The formula includes 2,500 micrograms of biotin, plus keratin and a B-vitamin complex, in a peach-flavored gummy. The recommended dose is 2 gummies a day, and the 60-gummy 30-day supply costs 20 dollars. Olly is the right pick for anyone who does not like swallowing pills. The trade-off is that gummy supplements typically contain added sugar (2 to 4 grams per gummy) and have a lower biotin dose than some competitors.
How to choose the right hair growth vitamin
The right pick depends on the budget, the main concern, and the pill tolerance. For a budget under 15 dollars a month with mild concerns, Nature's Bounty Hair Skin and Nails is the right call. For a budget under 25 dollars a month with pill aversion, Olly Heavenly Hair gummies are the right call. For a budget under 50 dollars a month with shedding as the main concern, Viviscal Pro is the right call. For a budget under 50 dollars a month with thinning as the main concern and an interest in collagen support, Vital Proteins Hair Boost is the right call. For a budget above 60 dollars a month with the strongest clinical evidence as the priority, Nutrafol is the right call.
The right way to start is with a 3-month commitment to one supplement at the recommended dose, then evaluate the results. Hair growth takes time, and the first month usually shows no visible change. Months 2 to 3 may show reduced shedding, which is an early sign the supplement is working. Months 4 to 6 show the visible new growth. If no improvement after 6 months, the right next step is a dermatologist visit to check for underlying causes like thyroid disease, iron deficiency, or autoimmune hair loss, which require medical treatment rather than supplements.
What to avoid
Three categories of hair growth products are not worth the money. The first is hair growth gummies that contain very low doses of biotin, often 300 to 1,000 micrograms, which is below the 2,500 microgram threshold that most clinical studies use. The second is hair growth serums and shampoos, which work on the hair shaft but do not affect the hair follicle, so they cannot change the hair growth cycle. The third is proprietary blend hair growth supplements that do not disclose the dose of each ingredient, which makes it impossible to know if the product contains enough of the active nutrients to work. The right call is a hair growth vitamin that discloses the dose of each ingredient, contains at least 2,500 micrograms of biotin, and ideally includes saw palmetto for hormonal hair loss.
The single biggest mistake hair growth vitamin buyers make is buying a low-dose product and giving up after one month because they see no results. The right approach is to buy a clinically validated product at the recommended dose, commit to 6 months of daily use, and check with a doctor if there is no improvement. A blood test for iron, vitamin D, thyroid, and B12 can identify a specific deficiency, which a targeted supplement can address more effectively than a broad-spectrum hair growth vitamin.
Bottom line
The best hair growth vitamin in 2026 is Nutrafol for the strongest clinical evidence at 79 dollars a month. Viviscal Pro is the best for excessive shedding at 50 dollars a month. Nature's Bounty is the best for basic hair growth nutrients at 11 dollars a month. Vital Proteins Hair Boost is the best for a combined hair and collagen approach at 40 dollars a month. Olly Heavenly Hair is the best for a gummy format at 20 dollars a month. The right approach is to pick the product that matches the budget and the main concern, commit to 6 months of daily use, and check with a doctor if there is no improvement.
